Glorious sunsets are an almost daily blessing here in beautiful Kaua’i, and Halau Ka Lei Kukui Hi’ilani was very happy to be enjoying one on the evening of our first hula show of 2013 at the Grand Hyatt Kaua’i in Poipu.
We started the performance with a traditional kahiko piece. The sun was setting into the clear blue horizon as Aunty Haunani Kaui’s voice filled the air with the lilting strains of beautiful Hawaiian mele. Our lovely wahine and sprightly keiki continued to dance for the enjoyment of the hotel guests as well as friends and family. We had so much fun!
Held at Kilohana, this very special annual event is organised with a view to support, uphold and pray for all the authorities in power on Kaua’i. We gather in great numbers every year to pray for our Mayor, government and military leaders, businessmen, educational planners, specialists and teachers, and our youth who are our future and future leaders.
This year, special guest speaker John Bevere of Messenger International in Colarado, mainland USA was with us, and he delivered an inspiring message that uplifted many of the more than 1,000 people who attended.
Dancers from all around Kaua’i came to lend their support and to contribute their gifts of hula at the Mayor’s Prayer Luncheon. As in previous years, Kumu Lei directed and choreographed the hula, combining each group’s members and talents in a captivating blend.
It was a wonderful lunch that everyone shared, graciously provided by Kilohana, and many of the participants and spectators alike had a great time reuniting with old acquaintances, strengthening relationships and making new friends.
