The annual Hanalei/North Shore Lions Club Pancake Breakfast draws lots of attention and eager participation, and this year was no different. April 7 saw more than 700 pancake breakfasts served to the myriad participants who gathered at the Hanalei Elementary School cafeteria. Everybody was excited and ready to eat, have fun, and also to pitch in for the fundraising effort.
Most of the funds raised at this annual event are channelled into scholarships and therefore bring a direct benefit to our young people. About $10,000 to $12,000 is given out each year, with most of it having been raised at the pancake breakfast.
Once again, Halau Ka Lei Kukui Hi’ilani is honoured and happy to kokua this event, eat pancakes, and meet up with our friends. It was also a special day for us as it was the first time our Beginners Ladies Class performed in public. After getting over their initial nervousness, they managed to let their hair down and dance their hearts out. Everyone had a wonderful time!
Some of you may be aware that Kanak Attack Entertainment Inc. streams live feeds of concerts featuring local artistes so that all can enjoy the performances via the internet. On Wednesday, 20 February, from 4pm to 6pm, a special session at the Princeville Shopping Centre in Hanalai opened to exuberant support from a packed house.
Featured performers for the evening were Maluhia (led by Coppin Colburn), Halau Ka Lei Kukui Hi’ilani (led by Kumu Hula Donna Leihi’ilani Kirkpatrick), Tapuarii Laughlin and Madison. The atmosphere was festive as each of the contributing artistes went all out to provide the audience both local and overseas with the best show ever!
