Earlier this year, Kumu Lei was in San Diego, California, debuting a series of hula workshops from January 23 to 25. The sessions were sponsored and organised by Auntie Kahanoa Floresca and her students — Hula Kahanoa is the mainland USA extension of Kumu Lei’s Halau Ka Lei Kukui Hi’ilani on Kaua’i.
Under the theme Ka Wā Mamua Ka Wā Mahope, the various workshops were designed to equip all participants to enter 2015 with wisdom, guidance and aloha from both their kupuna and Ke Akua. The various hula and oli that Kumu Lei chose to teach during this time were all thoughtfully picked to support this; they centred on celebrating people and places of Kaua’i.
Kumu Lei also extended an invitation to the students who attended the workshops to come to Kaua’i, experience the things they learnt about first-hand, and dance on her shores.
