Held on a beautiful Saturday evening at the Kilauea Theater and titled Celebrating The Magnificence Of Our Beloved Kaua’i, this special concert was planned in celebration of the beauty of the Garden Isle’s people, places and history.
Preparation for this event saw the entire hālau working hard together to assemble their outfits and adornments and practise their hula, not only to show their families and friends what they had learnt over the past year, but also to express and communicate through every oli, mele (song) and hula (both kahiko and ‘auana) the things, stories and history that make Kaua’i unique.
A wide range of musical genres ranging from ancient styles to popular contemporary tunes and brand new compositions were also featured during the concert. The guest musicians who were instrumental in bringing these melodies to life were Ipo Kahauna’ele, Garrett Santos, Ke’olu Gonzales, Michael “Mike” Keale and Kamealoha Hanohano Smith.
During the ho’ike, Kumu Lei also made a point of honouring her mother, who first instilled in her the love of hula and Hawaiian music that has carried her through her long and varied career.
